Karen Carpenter falls into the category of "things I took for granted when I was young and dumb".

I grew up with her and those songs and shuttered every time "Close to You" came on the radio. Now that I've grown up and can appreciate her voice, alas, she's gone.

I've noticed she's getting more recognition lately. I see her name pop up in the strangest places...like an Altec Users Board! I think her reputation suffered because of the genre she was in. Imagine if she morphed into jazz ala Diane Krall:

i got a better look at the way things go in the entertainment biz.

much talent may not be fully realized because of pressure from

whatever place.

actors that are typecast for certain roles,

musicians for certain types of music.

no doubt christina aguilera could sing opera, or gospel.

elvis wanted to do some songs, his manager said no.

and britney spears.

she can play most anything you would like to hear on a piano.

yet,

how many people know about that?

lets see,

her parents, her children, her ex husband (no. 2) ,

some friends and family back in Louisiana.

maybe 2-300 people?

which ain't many considering she's one of the most famous people in the world.

literally billions of people recognize her face.

and only a few hundred know she can play the piano?

something is rotten in hollywood ...

and i'd like to thank the carpenters for saving me from my mothers fav song.

when they started getting airplay she didn't play it nearly as often.

which basically saved it from burnout.

I'm reminded of the stories about Ella being judged as "too ugly" to be any good as a singer.
Chick Webb I believe was one of those band leaders who was looking for an attractive vocalist in the late 30's and felt that Ella was "too ugly" to be considered. Crazy.

That's just not true. Turn on the Elvis channel on Sirius/XM. He sang every song ever written.

Correction: his manager might have said no, but Elvis recorded it anyway.
